Voice over Internet Protocol (also known as VoIP, Internet Voice, IP telephony) is a technology that allows telephone calls to be made using a Broadband Internet connection instead of a regular “analog” phone line.
Voice over IP takes a voice, breaks it down into tiny bits of data and sends it over the Internet to another location. At its destination, these bits are reassembled back into a voice. Voices are treated like any other piece of Internet data, such as a Web page or audio file, distributed over the Net.
The compelling factor behind VoIP is an economical one. Long distance charges can cost businesses hundreds or thousands of pounds per month. If the business has a fixed cost (unlimited access connection to the Internet) calls transmitted over that connection can be effectively free.
All you need is:
- A Broadband Internet connection,
- An account with a VoIP service provider, such as Zoom or Skype,
- VoIP phone software,
- A microphone and headphone, or VoIP telephone.
We offer several products with VoIP capability including the DrayTek Vigor 2600VG. This product will enable you to make low or no cost telephone calls over the Internet, whilst simultaneously providing reliable high speed wireless Internet access.
